Don’t give up the ship! ~ James Lawrence, 1813, Historical Catchphrase [13008]
Captain James Lawrence, commander of the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812, uttered the famous words, "Don't give up the ship!" minutes before his death. Unfortunately the ship was given up approximately 30 minutes later. But his motivating words of courage and determination lived on. The battle cry is used by children as well as members of the US Naval Academy, and everyone in between.
