The English playwright William Congreve originally wrote, "Music has charms to soothe a savage breast." Through the years, the quote has erroneously been passed down to say "beast." Today, the most common usage as a proverb is "Music has charms to soothe the savage beast." This is especially true in America, Canada and Australia.

In some circles, the term "music" has been substituted to meet specific purposes. "Women have charms to soothe the savage beast," being one of them.
