First there was the X-rated movie, Deep Throat, that shocked the nation. It starred the young Linda Lovelace who became known for her talent as a fellatio artist. It was the first pornographic film to become internationally known and was a mega-success at the box office. Linda Lovelace quickly became a household name and the term 'deep throat' was well-known by all.

Four years later, when the book and movie, All The President's Men, became a hit in 1976, the term 'deep throat' became a catchphrase synonymous with whistleblower. The character known only as Deep Throat, played in the film by Hal Holbrook, strategically leaked information to Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein. Played by Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman respectively, the young reporters promised to keep the identity of Deep Throat a secret. This made the real identity of Deep Throat open to speculation for many years to come.
