Buddhist Proverbs (54)

May all beings have happy minds.

No one saves us but ourselves.
No one can and no one may.
We ourselves must walk the path.

If you propose to speak, always ask yourself:
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?

Be mindful of intention. Intention is the seed
that creates our future.

The no-mind
no-thinks
no-thoughts
about no-things.

There is no fire like greed,
no sickness like hunger of heart,
and no joy like the joy of freedom.

Overcome anger by love, ill-will by good will;
the greedy with liberality, the liar with truth.

Do not overrate what you have received nor envy others.
He who envies others does not obtain peace of mind.

To every man is given a key to the gates of heaven.
The same key opens the gates of hell.

When in doubt, meditate.

When you let go, you create space
for better things to enter your life.

Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace.

In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities,
in the expert’s mind there are few.

Your work is to discover your world and
then with all your heart give yourself to it.

Be where you are, otherwise you will miss your life.

Beware of the anger of the mouth.
Master your words. Let them serve truth.

Change is never painful, only your
resistance to change is painful.

You are a seeker. Delight in the mastery
of your hands and feet, of your words and thoughts.

Remembering a wrong is like
carrying a burden on the mind.

Be the witness of your thoughts.
You are what observes, not what you observe.

First intention, then enlightenment.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal
with the intent of throwing it at someone else;
you are the one who gets burned.

However many holy words you read,
however many you speak, what good
will they do you if you do not act on upon them?

Be a peacemaker in everyday life.
Display peace in everything you do.
Be peace. Live in peace.

Three things cannot be long hidden:
the sun, the moon, and the truth.

Doubt is a thorn that irritates and hurts; it is a sword that kills.

Live happily in the present moment. It is the only moment we have.

No matter how hard the past, you can always begin again.

One moment can change a day.
One day can change a life.
One life can change the world.

Don't keep searching for the truth, just let go of your opinions.

You will not be punished for your anger;
you will be punished by your anger.

Let go of anger. Let go of pride. When you are bound
by nothing you go beyond sorrow.

The instant we feel anger we have already ceased striving
for the truth, and have begun striving for ourselves.

There are only two mistakes one can make on the road to truth;
not going all the way and not starting.

There is no path to happiness. Happiness is the path.

If we could see the miracle of a single flower clearly,
our whole life would change.

Be sure that what you want is right for you to have.

Space can contain everything, but space does not entertain
the thought that it can contain everything.

What's done to the children is done to society.

When the student is ready, the master appears.

With gentleness overcome anger.
With generosity overcome meanness.
With truth overcome deceit.

Peace comes from within. Do not seek it from without.

Do not speak -- unless it improves on silence.

Train your mind to see something good in everything.

Better than a thousand hollow words,
is one word that brings peace.

Change how you see and see how you change.

Abandon yesterday, tomorrow and today.
Cross over to the farthest shore beyond life and death.

Thousand of candles can be lit from a single candle.
Happiness never ceases by being shared.

It is better to conquer yourself, than to win a thousand battles. T
hen victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you.

For in craving pleasure or in nursing pain, there is only sorrow.

Holding onto anger is like drinking poison
and expecting the other person to die.

Compassion is our deepest nature.
It arises from out interconnection with all things.

You only lose what you cling to.

Right now, it's like this.
